Job Description:

The London Borough of Merton Internship  is excited to announce its Apprenticeship Program for 2024, designed to provide individuals with the opportunity to gain practical experience in local government while developing essential skills for their careers. This apprenticeship is ideal for those interested in contributing to community services, policy development, and operational management within a supportive and dynamic environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Support various departments within the council, including Community Services, Housing, Environmental Services, and Administration, with day-to-day operations and special projects.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and initiatives that serve the local community.
  • Conduct research and gather data to support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Help prepare reports, presentations, and briefings for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Engage with residents and community groups to gather feedback and promote council services.
  • Participate in the organization of community events, workshops, and public consultations.
  • Provide administrative support, including data entry, filing, and managing correspondence.
  • Collaborate with mentors and team members to set personal and professional goals throughout the apprenticeship.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a current student, recent graduate, or an individual seeking a career change, with a genuine interest in local government.
  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4/A*-C, including English and Maths, or equivalent qualifications.
  • Minimum age of 18 years at the time of application.
  • Commitment to completing the apprenticeship program, which includes both practical work and formal training.

Experience:

  • No prior work experience in local government is required.
  • Any previous internship, voluntary work, or part-time experience in customer service, administration, or community engagement is advantageous.
  • A willingness to learn and engage in various tasks and responsibilities.

Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse communities.
  • Good organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Basic analytical skills, with an ability to interpret data and research findings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Enthusiastic and proactive approach to work, with a willingness to take initiative.
